SPRING 2008 NEWSLETTER
Election Day
The Municipal Election will take place next Tuesday, May 13th. The polls open at 6:00 AM and remain open until 8:00 PM. This is a critical election in that three (3) seats on the Township Council are open. It is very important that our neighborhoods get out and vote. How you vote is of course your own business. Please understand that there is political strength in numbers. The more of us that vote – the more our elected officials take heed to our concerns. Believe us when we t ell you that they carefully look at the numbers.
FOUR CORNER IMPROVEMENTS
(Eagle Rock Ave., Harrison Ave., Mississippi Ave., Main St.)
The Township has received funding for an ambitious project aimed at improving the Four Corners. It will include reshaping those confusing and often dangerous intersections to improve pedestrian safety and traffic flow. Also included are streetscape improvements. There is a design committee that includes Bill Kehoe as our ERCA representative. Bill has promised to make a strong push to modify some spaces that have been prone to loitering. This is the result of concerns expressed to ERCA reps by senior citizens from the Degnan House, area residents and business owners. This is indeed an exciting time with the launching of the Downtown redevelopment project which is underway on Main Street. Kudos to Our Lady of Lourdes for the nice job they completed in the front of their church. Things are looking up!
SPRING CLEAN UP
We want to thank Marie Demaio the principal of Washington School and her students for the neighborhood clean up they recently completed. They canvassed the area including Colgate Park and collected a lot of debris and litter. It is encouraging to see so many properties being upgraded. Everywhere you look new roofs and sidings are going up, steps & sidewalks are being installed and lawns & gardens are starting to shine. There is no greater measure of a neighborhood's vitali ty than pride in one's property. If by chance you have a neighbor who is not doing their part, call the Township's Property Maintenance Unit at 973-325-4119.
If you see any remodeling without a visible permit posted on the front of the house call the Township's Construction official at 973-325-4114. They will work with the property owner to correct the situation. They are fair and will provide the owner more than enough time to fix the situation before assessing any fines. Your call will be kept in confidence.
COLGATE PARK
As the weather started to warm up there were a few minor incidents in and around Colgate Park. Since that time the Township has responded by placing an additional Police Officer in the park after school and into the evening. It has worked like a charm. Our thanks to the WOPD for their efforts. The park is safe and vibrant. Families are enjoying the kiddie park, the Futsal court is as active as ever and the baseball field is being heavily utilized by scholastic teams, youth teams and adult teams.
